Shocking news tonight in Sorrenia as the nation has seen two remarkable events. Firstly, the happy news that the Party for Freedom and Democracy (PFD) and the National Democratic-Liberty Party (NDLP) have decided to finally formalise their long discussed and long expected merger. The two parties have now rolled into one, the Democratic-Liberty Party or DLP of Sorrenia. This new party encompasses a wide variety of political ideals and with a wealth of experience, will be worthy opposition, and hopefully long-time working allies, of currently President Miles of Sorrenia. The new party is being led by Alexei Janiszewski as Chairman, with Jason Hale as the Deputy Chairman.
However, to more shocking news, as there has been much unrest tonight in Sorrenia, with some even going as far as to wonder "Could there be a civil war?" whilst it certainly seems unlikely, the possibility must be entertained. It all began earlier tonight when Richard Hytholoday called for the end of the historic "Separation of Church and State" bill in Sorrenia, something that has long being viewed as a success by the majority of the population. With the latest census results showing that 56% of the population identified as Christian, he believed that it was time that the act was scrapped. Richard released a poll, stating that on behalf of the Opposition of Sorrenia, and the Commonwealth Party of Sorrenia (CPS) that they wished to have the act revoked. This was met by instant uproar at the idea, provoking the first of the evening's disruptions, and marking the beginning of the potential unrest.
With prominent officials such as President Miles of Sorrenia, as well as notable opposition politicians Alexei Janiszewski and Damian Billbrough all arguing that although the bill may need amendments, to entirely scrap it was pointless, Richard Hytholoday backtracked, specifying that this was an opinion poll, yet there were some claims he'd called fellow Opposition members "traitors" for siding against him in this. With this, President Miles of Sorrenia suggested a bill which called for an amendment, allowing Townships to establish official religions within Sorrenia, as long as 100% of the township supported, and if one member called for it's removal, then the Township would have separation once more. This was met, unsurprisingly from the people, with rousing support, yet the opposition of the CPS threatened once more to turn into a political upheaval. Yet this was still not the worst to come on a night of intrigue, shock and confusion.
With several prominent Sorrenians choosing tonight to defect to the CPS party from the NDLP and the USWP (Joey Kennedy and Llewellyn Lawton) some of these apparently in agreed politics, others in what appears to be apparent protest, the CPS has gained a considerable boost in Sorrenia, going from the smallest party to tied for third largest, before the DLP merger occurred. Bolstered, no doubt, by his apparent success over splitting some members of the USWP and NDLP on the article about separation of Church and State, Richard Hytholoday decided to bring up a lesser known law within Sorrenia, something that had not caused much issue until this evening. Article 27 on the Sorrenian Constitution and all it entailed, as well as the alarming absence of a strategy for a vote of "No-Confidence" in the current President at the time.
Article 27 states that the President may dismiss an official from office if felt necessary, something which alarmed many Sorrenians, especially from the CPS, but including some NDLP and PFD members. However, President Miles of Sorrenia was quick to alleviate the main worries, stressing that this was a rare occurrence and only when deemed absolutely crucial. However, this did not appease the CPS, who seem determined tonight to spread anxiety and fear in Sorrenia. Calling for an amendment to article 27, and with Damian Billbrough of the PFD calling for a clause adding a vote of "No-Confidence" in the President to be allowed within Sorrenia, several were surprised when both passed with no objections, the President himself encouraging them. Although President Miles of Sorrenia did this so that it would appease the CPS, as well as show that he is not, nor does not desire to become, the dictator that the CPS have tried to paint him as, they called that whilst this was a small victory for democracy, they needed to do more.
Finally tonight, in a rather shocking twist. the Naval branch of the Sorrenian Revolutionary Army has been suspended, due to what occurred next. Using threatening rhetoric, as well as releasing propaganda depicting machines of war, the CPS stated that they would bring an end to tyranny in Sorrenia, something that not only is not occurring, but will never occur within Sorrenia. Calling on all Navy personnel to protest against the government, declaring the government at one point as "the enemy of the people". This alarmed the majority of the nation, with some stating that "it's only a matter of time" before civil war erupted, or the nation descended into inactivity as everyone rushed to declare their side. Thankfully, through the intervention of the other Opposition members condemning Richard Hytholoday's actions, he seemed to relent.
Following this, President Miles of Sorrenia was able to get it under control, ensuring these "would be rebels" and potential leaders of a military junta were stopped in their tracks by passing an amendment which ensured the Army would not be allowed to protest, democratically or otherwise, as an organisation within Sorrenia, also suspending the Navy, whilst angering the CPS members further, has allowed there to be a sense of easing tensions in the general public, and with the majority of the population supporting President Miles of Sorrenia's decision, the only way things can go from here is upwards.
